Furnishing industry employees from around the UK descended upon Coventry for the fifth annual Sealy Cup five-a-side football tournament in aid of The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry’s charity.

The one-day tournament, which is generously sponsored by bed brand Sealy and furniture trade magazine Cabinet Maker, took place on Sunday 2 July 2017 at the Coventry Powerleague.

The sun was shining throughout the day but the competition didn’t need hotting up any further as 10 teams from companies from across the furnishing industry, including Celtheath, Cabinet Maker, Designer Contracts, Hypnos, Lebus and Whitemeadow, arrived ready to battle it out to claim the Sealy Cup and the personal pride of being the best in the furnishing industry.

Following a well fought competition, the two teams that made the last leg were the Whitemeadow Wanderers and Lebus. After a fierce eight-minute final, with the referee stepping in more than once to calm things down, Whitemeadow clinched the game with three goals to two. Aryon Can from Whitemeadow was also awarded ‘Player of the Tournament’.

In addition to the tournament, each team got to play an eight-minute game against Burnley FC’s Vintage Clarets, a team of ex-professional football players captained by John Deary.

The fun-packed day finished with a BBQ, prize giving and raffle in aid of the charity.

Dr Tony Smart MBE, Master of The Furniture Makers’ Company, said: “Once again, the annual Sealy Cup proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable day for furnishing industry employees to take part in while raising funds and awareness of what the charity does.

“On behalf of The Furniture Makers’ Company, I would like to thank our main sponsor Sealy for their support, particularly for organising the Vintage Clarets to play at the tournament which made the day extra special for the players, as well as our other sponsor Cabinet Maker magazine.”

Holly Housby, Sealy brand marketing manager, said: “The tournament was certainly the best one yet! It’s always a great day and it’s fantastic to see so many people from across the industry getting involved. We’re delighted that the Clarets took part again this year, they definitely had a lot of fun! We’re, as ever, extremely pleased to support such a worthwhile charity which does a lot for the industry.”
