Summary: From September 2023 we will be running the three year AMUSF Diploma, which can only be taught by Approved Facilities. Each of the three years focuses on both traditional and modern upholstery techniques. The majority of the course is practical, with a element of theory essential to understand the furniture, materials and fabrics used within the industry. Each stage is taught over one academic year, with one day a week in the Horsehair & Hessian workshop. This equates to a minimum of 215 hours tuition. The three stages are independently assessed and certificated. The AMUSF is currently the only accredited course within the sector. It is an ideal course for those wishing to pursue a career in the industry.

Summary: The Diploma course offers students a number of pathways to reach your goals in upholstery whilst preparing you with all the latest materials and processes used today. 3 teaching blocks are delivered over the academic year from a wide range of options and students are guided throughout the full scale projects (no sample exercises) to achieve finished usuable pieces Students can choose all their pathways at the beginning of the year or decide the next route once one is completed These new pathways have been created to equip students with a wide variety of skills to ensure they are confident to work in industry using todays modern methods and materials as well as keeping the much loved traditional methods alive We are focussing on using new sustainable products and natural fillings wherever possible You can choose a traditional pathway or a modern pathway or even a mix of both depending on the goals you wish to achieve.

Summary: The AMUSF Accredited Courses are delivered in three stages and upon completion result in the award of an AMUSF Diploma in upholstery. Each of the three stages is a qualification in its own right and is certificated separately. Each stage has a duration of 210 hours which must be completed with a 12 month period. The stages have been carefully constructed to complement each other and gradually progress the students knowledge and skill base up to a Diploma level. The stages can be taken in succession or Stages 1 & 2 can be taken in one year. At the end of each stage and after external verification, the tutor will provide a written report with marks awarded.

Starting with the basics of a drop-in seat, our students progress all the way to large traditionally upholstered armchairs, as well as developing the tailoring skills required for mid-century modern furniture. ​ Each student is encouraged to push themselves and aim for skills and creativity of the highest quality. We pride ourselves on the achievements of our upholstery students and our 100% pass rate, a high proportion of them achieving credits and distinctions for their work. Many go on to set up their own businesses or join other upholsterers and collectives, like our own at SAUS. ​ Certificates are awarded by the AMUSF on the successful completion of each stage. By the end of the third stage students will have achieved the full AMUSF Diploma and with practice will be equipped to take on the challenges of upholstering a diverse range of furniture, producing high quality work stamped with individuality and creativity.
