What’s your favourite Day?
The Design Guild Mark has traditionally been an award for new and emerging designs developed for volume production. A mark of excellence that will help propel a piece to greater levels of success.
However every now and then we see an iconic, instantly recognisable design submitted for judging.
In 2017 we had no shortage of them with Rodney Kinsman’s Orbit Mirror, Frederick Brown’s MultiDrawer and the Robin Day Polyside Chair and Robin Day Armchair all vying for Design Guild Mark success and achieving it.
Adding a nice touch of serendipity to the Design Guild Mark awards evening on 25 May 2017 was that it would have been Robin Day’s 102nd birthday. Seven years after his death Robin is still winning awards for his timeless designs that span generations.
To date, three of his chairs have been awarded a Design Guild Mark: the 675 Chair and the aforementioned Robin Day Polyside Chair and Robin Day Armchair.
So which is your favourite Day chair?
With its pared-down form and undisguised structure, the 675 Chair – originally designed for Hille – was apparently one of Robin’s favourites.
He utilised the tensile strength and visual lightness of formed ply to make the one-piece back and arm component – the chair’s most characteristic feature – combined with a carefully considered tubular frame and upholstered seat.
Working closely with the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation, Case Furniture launched the a licensed chair which sensitively reflects the original 1952 design in terms of proportion, detailing and specification while using modern production techniques.
Despite the Polypropylene Chair being originally developed in 1963, it was the second version, launched in 1964, which was adopted as the standard design.
Following on from the international success of the ground-breaking Polyside Chair, Robin designed an armchair which would offer greater comfort in situations such as public waiting areas.
Over the years a range of interchangeable bases were produced for a wide variety of applications, the A frame remaining the most popular for domestic and general use.
