Visit to RAF Valley, Anglesey
By Dawn Hamlet, liveryman
As a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, I had the honour of visiting RAF Valley in Anglesey, an experience that was as enlightening as it was memorable. The visit was graciously hosted by Flight Lieutenant J Bird and the distinguished XXV(F) Squadron, whose hospitality and professionalism left a lasting impression.
Our day began with an in-depth briefing on the station’s vital role in fast jet training, followed by a guided tour of the hangars and a close-up look at the aircrafts. The precision and dedication evident in every aspect of the base’s operations resonated deeply with our own values as furniture makers—craftsmanship, discipline, and pride in tradition.
A particular highlight was being invited to attend the Squadron’s Dining In/Dining Out meal. This formal military tradition was a privilege to witness and participate in, offering a rare glimpse into the camaraderie, ceremony, and respect that define RAF culture. The evening was a celebration of service and transition, steeped in heritage and marked by heartfelt tributes and spirited conversation.
Throughout the visit, I was struck by the parallels between our two worlds. Whether in the meticulous maintenance of aircraft or the structured elegance of the dining event, the RAF’s commitment to excellence mirrored our own pursuit of mastery in craft.
I left RAF Valley with a profound appreciation for the men and women who serve there, and a renewed sense of connection between our livery company and the values upheld by the Royal Air Force. It was a day of insight, honour, and shared tradition—one I will cherish for years to come.
