South West Simulated Shoot returns for second year
Our South West region’s Simulated Shoot returned to Exmoor for its second consecutive year, offering participants a challenging and enjoyable day in the field while raising valuable funds for our charity.
Twelve guns took part in the event on Saturday 7 March, shooting across four stands designed to simulate a variety of birds. Each participant fired around 250 cartridges over the course of the day, providing plenty of action and testing shooting skills in different scenarios.
Weather conditions added an extra layer of difficulty as fog rolled in during the latter part of the shoot. The final stand proved particularly challenging, with clays emerging suddenly from the mist overhead and putting the guns’ reactions and accuracy to the test.

The event was organised by Past Master Paul von der Heyde on behalf of the South West region. Ahead of the shoot, he also hosted a pre-shoot supper for participants at his home on the Backdown Hills, giving everyone the opportunity to gather and socialise before the main event.
The shoot raised approximately £620 for our charity and was widely enjoyed by those who took part.
Following the success of this year’s event, organisers hope to run the shoot again next year, possibly in May. The format could also accommodate additional guns if more members express interest in taking part.
