New chairman of British Furniture Confederation urges industry to participate in crucial government consultation
Tony Attard, the newly appointed chairman of the British Furniture Confederation (BFC), is calling on the furniture industry to act in response to a critical government consultation that could significantly impact businesses across the sector.
In a message to BFC members, Tony explained that one of his key responsibilities as chairman is to bring to light parliamentary matters that may affect the industry. He highlighted the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme Consultation, which is set to shape the future of electricity costs for manufacturing businesses in the UK.
The scheme, part of the government’s Industrial Strategy, aims to support frontier industries within sectors identified as crucial to the UK’s economic growth, by reducing electricity costs for those who meet specific thresholds for electricity intensity. These sectors, known as the IS-8, include industries that the government views as critical to the future of the UK economy.
However, Tony raised concerns that the furniture industry may not be classified as one of the foundation industries eligible for the benefits of this scheme. If the sector is excluded, businesses within the furniture industry would be forced to continue paying the high Renewable Obligation Feed-in Tariffs (ROFIT) and the capacity market costs, further driving up electricity expenses that are already among the highest in Europe.
“The financial burden of these additional charges will only make the industry even more uncompetitive,” Tony warned. “This is a critical moment for us to make our voices heard.”
Tony has urged all members to participate in the consultation, which is open until 19 January. By submitting feedback, the BFC hopes to present a united front and compelling data to ensure that the furniture industry is not left behind in the new scheme.
“The more input we can provide, the greater the chance we have to avoid these increased costs,” Tony added. “This is a matter of survival for many businesses in our sector.”
