Joanna Knight, liveryman and chairman of our East of England Region, represented The Furniture Makers’ Company at Stowmarket High School’s annual design exhibition last week.

Understandably, last year’s event was cancelled but with less than half the usual amount of time to prepare, the school managed to put on an impressive display. All the students are either studying for A Levels or GCSEs.

The pictured sideboard includes beautiful, rounded corners and a smooth-running wooden tambour shutter. The coffee table incorporates a stunning piece of burr elm set in resin. Designed by a GCSE student, the floating table is a symmetrical design with the top held in place by thin wire providing the piece rigidity and stability.

Joanna has attended the Suffolk school’s exhibition for the past five years.  Stowmarket High School is one of many schools that has been included in our annual School Design Prize scheme with previous winners having been invited to attend the Young Furniture Makers Exhibition at Furniture Makers’ Hall as part of the National School Design Prize competition.
