The Grierson Workshop Cooperative, a long-established woodworking and creative hub, has announced the availability of a new studio space for furniture and product designers.

Based in a 3,400 sq ft workshop in Acton, the cooperative offers a rare combination of scale, stability, and professional-grade facilities. The building features high ceilings, abundant natural light, excellent public transport links, and 24/7 access, making it an ideal environment for full-time makers.

A workshop with a long creative history

The space was founded in 1990 by British designer-maker Martin Grierson, who produced bespoke furniture from the workshop for many years alongside a team of skilled craftspeople. As Grierson began to retire, bench space was gradually rented to other independent makers.

In 2012, to protect the character and long-term security of the workshop, Grierson and the resident makers came together to form the cooperative. Today, the workshop is fully owned and operated by its members — currently nine like-minded partners who both work in and manage the space.

Professional facilities and equipment

Members have access to an extensive range of industrial woodworking, fabrication, and digital tools. These include panel and rip saws, spindle moulders, planers, thicknessers, wide-belt sanding, veneer presses and stitching equipment, band saws, mortisers, spray facilities, metal fabrication tools, a laser cutter, and a 3D printer.

The workshop also offers a communal office with computer access and Adobe Illustrator, a kitchen and lunch room, fully heated working areas, photographic backdrop, weekly commercial waste collection, and access to stock timber available to purchase on site. Compressed air lines run throughout the building.

The cooperative benefits from a wider creative network, with neighbouring businesses providing CNC machining, photo and film studios, and specialist printing services.

Studio space now available

A 117 sq ft studio / craft space is now available within the workshop. Suitable for a furniture designer-maker or product designer, the unit comes clear and includes full access to all shared machinery and facilities. A woodworking bench and hazardous materials cabinet can be provided on request, and the space can be reduced for a lower rental cost if required.

Interested applicants are invited to submit a CV, portfolio, and a short description of their intended work and projects: dan@danielbradley.co.uk

With its cooperative ownership model, strong professional focus, and deep roots in British furniture making, the Grierson Workshop Cooperative continues to offer a secure and collaborative base for makers working in Acton.
