The seat is sculpted from quartersawn Bog Oak, revealing striking natural figuring, that catches the light and draws the eye.
At the heart of this piece, is a continuous laminated frame of one hundred Bog oak veneers that forms the backrest, arms, and legs, fixed in place by hand finished bronze details.
The single flow was central to the design as I wanted to create a structure that felt sculptural yet light. The curves are deliberate, shaped to echo natural forms while providing support.
I also intended for the bench to encourage you to take a moment to pause- hence the name Gratus, derived from the Latin for grace and gratitude. The piece is designed for transitional spaces, like hallways or galleries, where people pass through but rarely stop. The gentle scoop of the seat, the floating effect, and the warm bronze accents are all subtle invitations to slow down, to notice, to sit.
Joseph’s work is deeply rooted in the natural world. Drawing inspiration from organic forms, natural structures, the raw side and the quiet intelligence of nature. Focusing on artistic function everything in his designs is considered and always tell a story.
