Steve’s story

Steve, a retail manager in a furniture store, was struck down with a severe heart infection that left him signed off from work and hospital bound for six weeks.

To make matters worse, Steve was made redundant while hospitalised.

Steve had worked within the furnishing industry for 32 years. However, he had only been employed by his current employer for less than two years and was not entitled to any redundancy pay.

Unable to claim state benefits until he was discharged from hospital and not well enough to look for work, Steve became reliant on friends for financial support.

The stress was severely affecting Steve and he didn’t know where to turn until one of his friends suggested he apply for a welfare grant from The Furniture Makers’ Company.

We were able to deal with his application urgently and make a grant to help with rent, bills and immediate needs, so that he could concentrate on his recovery.

Steve said: “Thank you so much for the grant.  I was both shocked and delighted to receive the money!  I am really pleased you have taken me at face value and helped me out when in genuine need.  Once again, thank you so much!”
