4. Tell everyone your dreams.
As you approach your final deadlines, you are going to start considering what the future may hold for you after university. When you chose to go to university 3 or 4 years ago, you will have had a vision of what you want to achieve and where you’d like university to help you get to. There are many ways to be involved with the furnishing industry, be it through designing, making, marketing, sales, both domestically and abroad. Whatever your dreams and ambitions are now is the time to be honest with people and let people know.
Whenever you talk to someone about the future don’t be shy about telling them what you want to do, where you want to be, and what sort of job you want to try to get. Plans after university will be the topic of many conversations for you over the next few months, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to drop into conversation what you’d really love to do. The reason for telling everyone (and we really mean everyone) is that you never quite know who is listening. Whether you’re talking to a friend, family member, tutor, or potential employer, you’ll be surprised at the amount of people who can help you get where you want to be. Many people don’t like to reveal who they work for or represent too quickly when talking to students. This is particularly noticeable at exhibitions, where scouts often hide their identities for as long as possible. This is because people want to understand the kind of person you are before they reveal that they could help you. Therefore, it is important to speak with passion to every person who shows an interest, regardless of who you think they are.
For example, real stories from YFM members include one time when a CEO of a major design consultancy had been looking through their work but had not revealed who they were, whilst in a separate incident a student revealed their ambitions about studying and working abroad only to find out that the man they were talking to ran a creative industries European exchange business. Opportunities opening up like that sounds like they’re down to luck, but in reality, the more people you tell the luckier you will become.
