The Livery Companies Skills Council (LCSC) which reports to the Livery Committee is an autonomous group representing the interests of approximately 30 subscribing Livery Companies each with a close interest in the development and continuity of the crafts and trades relevant to their sectors. The group was formed in 2003 following the disbanding of a much wider grouping of Livery education and training interests.
The role and aims of the LCSC are:
- to inform the Livery of developments in learning and skills, particularly for those Livery companies which have a continued interest in their trade or profession;
- to provide a focus for issues arising from the development of learning and skills policy, and to bring concerns of common interest to the Livery to the attention of Ministers and other leaders in the learning and skills sector;
- to share information and good practice on developments in vocational qualifications;
- to encourage members of Livery Companies to be governors of Further Education corporations and similar bodies;
- to share information concerning prizes and bursaries to encourage students and staff involved in vocational education.
The LCSC usually meets four times a year and is supported administratively by City & Guilds which sees the Council’s activities as being an important influence in the development of learning and skills policy.
With the continuing evolution of the education and training infrastructure in the UK through such bodies as Sector Skills Councils the LCSC believes that its current efforts should concentrate on championing the cause of small businesses and specialist trades which are often ignored when it comes to major initiatives.
The Company is represented on the LCSC by Jacqueline Bazeley (Liveryman).
